Adoption in America can be performed in a number of ways. Potential adoptive families can use free or low cost government services and may even be eligible for a government subsidy.  Outside of government services, families can use adoption professionals, the clergy, doctors or friends to help in their adoption search.  Adoption professionals include individuals, attorneys or professionals that assist in the adoption search to varying degrees.  Attorneys should always be involved and many attorneys make adoption their specialty. Other individuals with experience or expertise enter the  adoption field to help families market themselves or to help with other aspects of the process.  Adoption agencies are licensed by the state in which they operate, regulated charitable organizations staffed with knowledgeable adoption professionals.

Agency adoptions are those performed through a licensed child placing agency.  These agencies are regulated by law and are inspected for compliance by the state in which they operate.  Agencies are required to be 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. These organizations are staffed by experienced adoption professionals and are governed by a board of directors.
